The Bull Terrrier Club of Tampa Ba, [a 503-(c) (3)] has the only rescue program in Florida run by a Bull Terrier Club. Our parent club is the Bull Terrier Club of America. The BTCTB Rescue Committee (Rescue chairman, rescue committee members, and volunteers) will work with regional rescue liaisons and the BTCA National Rescue Committee in a spirit of cooperation, mutual respect and open communications to:Achieve timely intake of purebred Bull Terriers from area shelters or from owner surrenders. Insure that the Bull Terrier is placed in a calm, quiet environment; preferably in a private foster home. When necessary, quality boarding kennels may be acceptable. Insure that the Bull Terrier is appropriately evaluated and assessed for adoption. If the Bull Terrier is considered adoptable, a screening process for an acceptable home is begun. Applicants must have filled out the BTCA application, had a home check done, references checked, read and signed the adoption contract/release.
Frequently Asked Questions on Rescue
Please read the following guidelines, and the following questions. For further information, please download the rescue handouts on our "Forms and Links" page
ADOPTION GUIDELINES
Any person wishing to adopt a dog from the BTCTB rescue program will need to meet basic requirements. Any dog that is being cared for by the club may have additional adoption requirements other than those listed below, should the individual circumstances necessitate it.
• An application will need to be filled out, including contact information of at least one personal reference. You may fill out the application on line on our Application Page• A home visit is required and must be arranged by the BTCTB. • To avoid conflicts with other animals, we are unable to place a dog in a home where there are other pets unless the pets can meet prior to adoption. Many rescue dogs would do best as an only pet. During the home visit, the BTCTB representative will need to meet all pets that currently live in the home. • To avoid conflicts with small children, we are unable to place a dog in a home where there are children under the age of 10 unless the dog can be introduced to the child prior to adoption. We also recommend meeting all members of the household, regardless of age. • The adoption donation is $300-$600. All dogs are spayed or neutered, have current vaccinations and are microchipped prior to adoption. • The BTCTB reserves the right to decline the application of any potential adopter at any time.
- What is Rescue? Rescue is a labor of love by people who want to help dogs that are in desperate need, and who may not survive if they do not find people to help them.
- Does your club rescue any dog? Our club rescues purebred English Bull Terriers. When other evidence is lacking, determining whether a dog is purebreed can be a judgement call, based on a dog's appearance.
- How do Bull Terriers become rescue dogs? Typically, we may hear of dogs that must be given up their owners for various reasons, or we may hear of dogs that have been placed in shelters. Occasionally someone may contact us about a dog that is wandering loose in the community.
- Can your club help every Bull Terrier in need find a home? Unfortunately no. Our ability to help dogs is directly related to our resources, both human and financial. In a very real sense, rescue depends on your generosity. Also, not every dog is suitable for adoption, such as dogs that are overly agressive or have profound health problems.
- What is the difference between fostering and adoption? Fostering a dog means you have agreed to provide a temporary home and basic care such as shelter and food. Adoption means that the dog is yours and has found a home with you. If you decide to foster or adopt, our club rescue volunteers will help guide you through the process.
- If I decide to adopt or foster, is it guaranteed that I will get a dog? No. Not every one that wants to have a Bull Terrier in their home is suitable. Your living situation, whether you have to travel, or can be home enough to provide care will be a factor. Other considerations include your health, whether you are able to take care of a dog with a strong personality and physical presence. Some dogs may not be suitable for homes with other pets or children.
- How does adoption work? Do I fill out an application and then you drop off a dog to me? Yes, that is exactly what we hope will happen, with a few steps in between. After you send in your application, it will be assessed and we will be in communication with you. If a home visit is set up, and is successful, then a dog may be placed with you.
- Is there a fee for adoption? Yes, you may receive a priceless friend for a donation fee. The adoption donation is $300 to $600 dollars, depending on the age of the animal in question. All dogs are spayed or neutered, have current vaccinations and are micro-chipped prior to adoption.
- I understand there are Rescue Volunteers and other Bull Terrier Rescue organizations. Are they affiliated with you? The Bull Terrier Club of Tampa Bay's rescue effort is only affiliated with our Parent Club, The Bull Terrier Club of America. There are other Bull Terrier Rescue organizations and several independent volunteers also doing angel's work, trying to rescue dogs in need.
- Why should I send my donations to the Bull Terrier Club of Tampa Bay?
If you love Bull Terriers, we are the best choice. Our club has been incorporated since 1983, with our parent club being the Bull Terrier Club of America. We are non-profit, 501-(c)(3) tax deductible organization and all of our work is done by unpaid volunteers. Our rescue effort is financed by donations. We are a transparent club; come to our meetings, join our club and have fun while helping those in need.
- Do you keep my communication confidential? Yes. Any communication is only shared within the club on a need to know basis, to further the rescue process. Your application is filed with the Bull Terrier Club of America, and a volunteer from that club may contact you with information about other rescue dogs. We, the Bull Terrier Club of Tampa Bay will remain the contact for any dog that we have rescued and posted on our web site.
